ATTOCK: Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has inaugurated 127 development projects during a visit to Attock, including 59 road schemes with a reported combined value of Rs23 billion.
The projects cover road infrastructure, agricultural services, land records, education and public welfare facilities. The package is aimed at improving public services and connectivity across different parts of the district.
Among the facilities inaugurated were an Agri Mall, a land record centre, a model children’s home and the Fateh Jang Special Education Centre.
The road development programme includes major routes such as Fateh Jang-Pindi Gheb Road, Dhok Laham-Jhamat Road and Mithial Chowk-Dhok Pathan Road. These schemes are expected to improve transport links and make travel easier for residents in surrounding areas.
During her visit, Maryam Nawaz also reviewed development activities and spoke about infrastructure challenges facing the district.
Drainage improvements were among the issues highlighted, particularly in areas affected by water accumulation after heavy rainfall. The chief minister said development work was underway to address such problems and improve local facilities.
The visit also attracted large gatherings of residents, political workers and children. People welcomed the chief minister’s convoy at several locations, while flower petals were showered along parts of its route.
Roads including Hatian Road, Kamra Road and University Road were decorated with rose petals ahead of her arrival.
Maryam Nawaz also interacted with members of the public during the visit. She reportedly removed security barriers to meet residents and invited children to join the inauguration activities.
Addressing a gathering, she recalled an earlier encounter with a young girl who had asked for her autograph during a visit to Galla Mandi. She used the example to emphasise the importance of maintaining contact with ordinary citizens.
The chief minister also criticised practices that, in her view, kept members of the public away from political leaders and public events. She said serving people was a source of personal satisfaction.
During her speech, Maryam Nawaz responded to allegations of corruption and challenged her critics to present evidence of wrongdoing. She said she was prepared to face accountability if any corruption was established.
She also praised beautification work in Attock’s commercial areas and compared the appearance of the city’s market with Lahore’s Liberty Market.
The development package includes projects in several sectors, but their overall impact will depend on timely completion, construction quality and continued maintenance.
