Military Courts Issue Sentences to 25 Individuals Over May 9 Attacks

Military courts have sentenced 25 civilians to prison terms ranging from two to ten years for their involvement in violent attacks on military installations during the May 9, 2023, riots.

According to the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR), the Field General Court Martial (FGCM) issued the sentences in the first phase of the trials, finding the accused guilty of attacking key military sites, including the Jinnah House, General Headquarters (GHQ), and the Punjab Regimental Center.

Notable sentences include:

  • 10 years in prison: Jan Muhammad Khan, Muhammad Imran Mehboob, Raja Muhammad Ehsan, Rehmatullah, Anwar Khan, Ali Shan, Dawood Khan, Umar Farooq, and several others for attacks on Jinnah House, GHQ, and other installations.
  • 9 years in prison: Muhammad Afaq Khan for the Bannu Cantt attack.
  • 2 to 7 years in prison: Individuals involved in attacks on Chakdara Fort, Multan Cantt, and other military sites.

The Pakistan Army emphasized that all legal procedures were strictly followed, ensuring transparency and the provision of legal rights to the accused. Irrefutable evidence collected during the investigation led to their convictions.

The Army reiterated its commitment to justice and vowed to continue prosecuting individuals involved in such acts of violence. These sentences follow a Supreme Court directive to resolve pending cases related to the May 9 events by December 13, 2024.
