Federal Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Cheema chaired a high-level meeting to review progress on the ML-1 Karachi–Rohri section. The meeting focused on project implementation, documentation, and coordination with development partners.
Officials said the main goal is Timely Completion of all preparatory work. The minister stressed that delays in documentation must be avoided. He instructed all departments to speed up procedures related to the railway project.
Senior officials from the Economic Affairs Division and Pakistan Railways briefed the meeting. They updated participants on ongoing work and future planning for the ML-1 project. Representatives from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) also attended the session.
The minister emphasized that Timely Completion of documentation is essential for securing funding. He said the government aims to finalize ADB financing in the upcoming fiscal year. He also highlighted the importance of meeting all procedural requirements on time.
Ahad Cheema directed the Ministry of Railways to work closely with the Planning Division. He asked them to ensure readiness of the PC-1 and other required documents. He said this step is critical for project approval and smooth execution.
He further stated that Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is keen to see progress on ML-1. The government plans to hold the groundbreaking ceremony within the current year. He added that Timely Completion of early phases will help achieve this target.
The minister described the ML-1 Karachi–Rohri section as a key priority project. He said it will improve freight transport and strengthen Pakistan Railways operations. He also confirmed that the government is working on extending coordination for the full ML-1 route from Karachi to Peshawar.
ADB Country Director Emma Fan appreciated the efforts of Pakistani authorities. She said the bank is committed to supporting documentation and technical processes. She also assured cooperation in reducing review timelines for faster implementation.
She added that ADB will ensure the hiring of consultants on time. This will help maintain project momentum and support Timely Completion of key stages.
Officials reiterated that efficient coordination between institutions is necessary. They said the success of ML-1 depends on structured planning and continuous monitoring.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from all sides. Authorities agreed that Timely Completion of groundwork will be essential for launching the project without further delay.
