The Sindh government has announced a new Mohenjo Daro air safari connecting Karachi with the ancient city of Mohenjo-Daro. The initiative aims to promote cultural tourism and highlight Sindh’s rich historical heritage.
Officials from the Sindh Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) and a private aviation company signed an agreement to operate the service. Managing Director Fayaz Ali Shah and CEO Imran Aslam formalized the partnership.
The Mohenjo Daro air safari will give passengers breathtaking aerial views of Karachi’s coastline, the province’s lush mangrove forests, and the diverse landscapes of Sindh. Authorities said the service offers a unique travel experience for both domestic and international tourists.
“Mohenjo Daro is a treasure of our history, and this air safari will allow visitors to appreciate its significance from the skies,” said Fayaz Ali Shah.
Mohenjo-Daro, located in Larkana district, dates back over 5,000 years and was part of the Indus Valley Civilization. The city’s original name is still unknown. Archaeologists discovered Mohenjo-Daro in 1920. The site is notable for its advanced urban planning, multistoried buildings, brick-paved streets, and a sophisticated wastewater management system.
Among its remarkable features is an 8-foot-deep public bathing pool, surrounded by small changing rooms and bathrooms. Historians note that Mohenjo-Daro lacked evidence of rulers, weapons, or armies, suggesting it was a peaceful city. The civilization thrived until changes in the Indus River likely caused its abandonment.
Experts warn that Mohenjo-Daro is at risk of serious deterioration and may be destroyed by 2030 if conservation measures are not implemented.
The Sindh government hopes that the Mohenjo Daro air safari will not only promote tourism but also raise awareness about the need to preserve this UNESCO World Heritage site. Travelers can soon experience the beauty and history of Mohenjo-Daro from the air, combining education, adventure, and scenic views in a single journey.
