KARACHI – Mondo Coffee Bar, located in DHA Phase-VIII, has been summoned by the Consumer Court on October 31 over allegations of copying Thailand’s Mondo Espresso & Tea Bar. The local café is accused of using a similar name, logo, and design to attract customers.
The complaint, filed by Ali Jafri, claims he was misled into believing that Mondo Coffee Bar in Karachi was part of the international chain. Jafri stated that he discovered on social media that the Thai brand had no affiliation with the local outlet. Lawyers argue that Mondo Coffee Bar’s coffee cups, takeaway bags, and tissue papers closely resemble the original, raising concerns of false advertising and deceptive business practices.
The complainant is seeking Rs50 lakh in damages, citing financial loss and mental stress. The Consumer Court has directed Mondo Coffee Bar to submit all relevant documents and a written defense before the hearing scheduled later this month.
This case highlights the growing tensions between local cafés and international brands in Karachi. Earlier this year, Sattar Buksh, known for its moustached mermaid logo, successfully defended itself against Starbucks in court, emphasizing local creativity and innovation. Analysts say Mondo Coffee Bar’s legal battle could become another high-profile story in Karachi’s café industry.
Mondo Coffee Bar has yet to issue a public statement regarding the allegations. Café owners and patrons are closely watching the proceedings, as the outcome may set a precedent for branding and intellectual property disputes in the city’s vibrant food and beverage sector.
The café scene in Karachi has expanded rapidly, attracting both local entrepreneurs and international chains. Experts note that while local cafés thrive on unique branding, cases like Mondo Coffee Bar’s show the importance of careful design choices to avoid legal complications.
