Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah has inaugurated the Sindhi Muslim Food Walk in Karachi. The project aims to improve the area’s commercial appeal and provide a better experience for families and visitors.
Addressing the inauguration ceremony, Shah praised Chanesar Town Chairman Farhan Ghani and his team. He appreciated their efforts to complete the project using the town administration’s own resources.
The chief minister said the initiative showed how local governments could improve public spaces through proper planning. He also stressed the importance of better financial management and revenue generation.
Shah encouraged other town administrations to follow Chanesar Town’s example. He said towns generating more revenue would receive additional development projects.
He added that Chanesar Town had performed well in revenue collection and development activities. The Sindhi Muslim Food Walk would also strengthen Karachi’s commercial and recreational facilities.
Sindhi Muslim Food Walk Project Details
The project was launched by TMC Chanesar Town on February 1, 2026. Construction and improvement work was completed in October 2026.
The development includes several infrastructure improvements. These include replacement of sewerage lines and installation of underground electrical cables.
The project also involved removing overhead wires and repairing roads and footpaths. Modern streetlights and decorative lighting have also been installed.
Other improvements include landscaping, roundabout beautification, and better parking arrangements. Authorities have also installed traffic signs and road markings.
Shah said Karachi had significant potential for food and cultural tourism. He believes such projects can encourage private investment and create employment opportunities.
He also stressed that development work requires proper maintenance after inauguration. The chief minister directed the town administration to maintain cleanliness and effective waste management.
He further ordered officials to ensure working streetlights, plantation, and better traffic control.
Sindh Government Supports Local Governments
Shah said the provincial government was committed to strengthening local government institutions. He highlighted financial support, institutional reforms, and improved revenue collection.
He recalled that the government doubled the OZT grant for Town Municipal Corporations in 2023. The grant for Union Committees was doubled in 2024.
The Urban Immovable Property Tax was also transferred to Town Municipal Corporations. The move aims to improve their financial position and increase local revenue.
The government is also supporting municipal infrastructure through the CLICK programme. Property surveys have been conducted to strengthen the revenue base of town administrations.
Major Development Projects Planned Across Karachi
The chief minister said Karachi remained central to the provincial government’s development agenda. He announced that work on 165 roads across the city would begin soon.
He also mentioned several major infrastructure projects. These include Shahrah-i-Bhutto Expressway and the K-IV Greater Karachi Water Supply Project.
Other initiatives include BRT Red Line and Yellow Line, Korangi Causeway Flyover, and the Greater Karachi Sewerage Plan. The Karachi Water and Sewerage Improvement Project is also part of the development programme.
Shah said the government was also improving parks, playgrounds, and public spaces. Rehabilitation projects include Empress Market, Frere Hall, Jahangir Park, Karachi Zoo, and Safari Park.
Baldia Sports Complex is also among the facilities being improved. He added that 28 parks and playgrounds had been developed through the CLICK programme.
The government is also planning food streets along Tipu Sultan Road. Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab has briefed the chief minister about improvement work at Burns Road.
Remarks on Electricity Poles and Security
During his speech, Shah made humorous remarks about recent media coverage of electricity poles. He joked that seeing a pole at the venue had made him cautious about another controversy.
He said the media’s attention had helped highlight problems involving obstructing electricity poles. Shah also criticised delays in removing certain poles despite repeated directions to K-Electric.
He referred to a long-pending electricity pole in Sukkur. According to him, progress towards its removal had now accelerated.
The chief minister also discussed public security and illegal weapons. He directed the Sindh police chief to ensure proper security arrangements around the food walk.
Shah said he wanted Karachi and the wider province to become free of illegal weapons. He argued that displaying weapons publicly created fear rather than security.
He also said street crime in Karachi had declined due to government and law enforcement efforts.
Government Invites Business Community
Shah invited business representatives to participate in commercially viable government projects. He said these opportunities could generate profits and support economic activity.
He encouraged private businesses to work with the provincial government. He also asked them to understand the administrative and procurement challenges faced by public institutions.
The chief minister said cooperation could help develop practical solutions. He added that public-private partnerships could support further development across Karachi.
The inauguration of the Sindhi Muslim Food Walk marks another effort to improve Karachi’s commercial and recreational spaces. The provincial government has also stressed maintenance, security, and continued investment in local infrastructure.
