ISLAMABAD โ The Murree Expressway has been closed for all traffic due to heavy snowfall. The road is blocked from Phulgran Toll Plaza to Murree. Authorities say the closure affects general traffic but allows local residents and emergency vehicles to pass.
Motorway police are working to clear the snow and restore traffic flow as soon as possible. The closure comes amid a surge of tourists visiting winter destinations like Murree, Galyat, Nathia Gali, and Thandiani following the first snowfall of the season.
The Meteorological Department has forecast more snow and rain across northern and central regions. Strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in Naran, Kaghan, Dir, Swat, Kohistan, Mansehra, Galyat, and the Neelum Valley. Cities including Islamabad and Lahore may see rain accompanied by thunderstorms.
Authorities have warned that icy conditions and road closures on the Murree Expressway could disrupt travel. Landslides are also possible in northern areas such as upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kashmir, and Gilgit-Baltistan. Drivers are advised to avoid unnecessary travel and follow safety guidelines.
The snowfall in Murree has caused temperatures to drop sharply, increasing the chill in surrounding areas. While most of Balochistan is forecast to remain cold, Sindh is expected to stay dry and chilly. Emergency services remain on high alert to respond to any accidents or weather-related incidents.
Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely. The motorway police urge tourists and commuters to stay updated on traffic updates and avoid traveling on the Murree Expressway until conditions improve. Snow-clearing teams are deployed at key points along the route to facilitate safer passage once the snow subsides.
Residents are advised to take precautions, and travelers are encouraged to delay trips to Murree until the road is fully cleared. The combination of heavy snowfall, strong winds, and low temperatures makes travel risky for all non-essential vehicles.
