Murtaza Wahab Represents Firm in Court Amid Petroleum Smuggling Allegations

Murtaza Wahab Represents Firm in Court Amid Petroleum Smuggling Allegations

A legal debate arose in a Karachi court involving Murtaza Wahab, where questions were raised about his appearance as a lawyer while holding public office.

The Customs lawyer objected to Murtaza Wahab appearing in the case as legal counsel. He argued that a serving mayor cannot represent clients in court.

He also stated that higher court judgments already exist on this legal issue. According to him, the law clearly restricts such dual roles.

During proceedings, Justice Nisar Bhanbhro observed that strict implementation of the rule could impact many lawyers. He made remarks about professionals holding multiple roles.

Justice Saleem Jessar also noted that several lawyers working in government positions still appear in courts. His comment highlighted inconsistencies in practice.

In a lighter exchange, the Customs lawyer referred to Murtaza Wahab as a brother while discussing the legal argument. This led to a humorous remark from the bench.

Justice Jessar responded by asking which โ€œbrotherโ€ was being referred to in a lighter tone, referring to classical references.

The Customs lawyer later requested that the observation regarding in-service officials be included in the court order.

Murtaza Wahab clarified his position during the hearing. He said he receives no salary from the Sindh government as mayor.

He further explained that he works as an elected representative and also continues his private legal practice.

During the hearing, Murtaza Wahab also spoke about the case involving a private petroleum company. He said Customs officials had conducted a raid on a godown.

According to him, two employees were also arrested during the operation. He added that the company was accused of hoarding, not smuggling.

The Customs lawyer maintained that the firm had exceeded permitted stock limits. He said the action was based on intelligence reports.

He further argued that the petroleum products were being illegally stored and sold.

After hearing both sides, the bench dismissed the case against the private company.

The proceedings highlighted legal questions around dual professional roles and enforcement actions. The matter involving Murtaza Wahab drew significant attention in the courtroom discussions.
