MUSAKHEL โ In a shocking display of outdated customs, eight men were forced to walk barefoot over burning coals by an illegal jirga in Musakhel district. The ritual was carried out to โproveโ their innocence in a shoplifting case.
The incident occurred in Kot Khan Muhammad on Monday, where traditional norms took precedence over state law and basic human rights. Locals described the act as a disturbing revival of a centuries-old practice believed to have disappeared in modern times.
Area residents said a local shopkeeper convened the jirga after alleging theft in his store. The jirga ordered that all accused men endure the ordeal of walking on burning coals to demonstrate their innocence. While no physical injuries were reported, the psychological and social impact on the men remains significant.
Deputy Commissioner Razaq Khajjak confirmed that authorities have received reports of the incident and that an investigation is underway. Officials are identifying those who organized and enforced the illegal jirga. Citizens have demanded strict action against all involved, calling the practice unacceptable and a blatant violation of human rights.
The Human Rights Commission of Pakistan has condemned the incident, highlighting that such rituals reflect the persistence of violent and outdated customs. Advocates stressed that these practices undermine the rule of law and question the effectiveness of state authority in remote areas.
Local civil society members emphasized the urgent need to end practices based on fear and superstition. They called on the government to ensure proper education, awareness, and legal enforcement to protect vulnerable communities from such regressive customs.
