Former Senator Mushtaq Ahmed has announced his resignation from Jamaat-e-Islami (JI), stating that he will now work independently to promote democracy, human rights, and constitutional freedoms across Pakistan.
In his statement, Mushtaq Ahmed confirmed that he submitted his resignation on September 19 while traveling aboard the Global Samood Flotilla, an international humanitarian mission. He explained that his decision was driven by a desire to pursue a broader personal mission that goes beyond the boundaries of political organizations.
“Organizations have their limits,” the former senator said. “Sometimes you must work independently for the causes you truly believe in.”
Focus on Human Rights and Democracy
Following his resignation, Mushtaq Ahmed expressed his commitment to defending the rights of marginalized groups, journalists, and victims of injustice. He stated that his new mission centers on fighting for democracy, free media, and human rights in Pakistan and abroad.
“I want to openly fight for human rights, democracy, and a free media,” he declared, emphasizing that these are causes that transcend political affiliations.
Advocacy for Global and National Issues
The ex-senator also highlighted his intention to campaign for the constitutional rights of Dr. Aafia Siddiqui, as well as to continue advocating for the people of Palestine and Pakistan’s federating units.
Earlier this year, Mushtaq returned to Pakistan after being detained by Israeli authorities while participating in a humanitarian flotilla. His return was met with widespread support from human rights activists and civil society members.
