PIA In Turbulence MNAs Call Ticket Prices ‘Unjustified’

Members of the National Assembly’s Standing Committee on Government Assurances expressed strong disapproval over the recent Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) fare hikes. The session was chaired by Senator Nuzhat Sadiq and attended by officials from the ministries of energy, communications, information, and parliamentary affairs. The agenda also included gas supply, LPG cylinder standards, and high toll rates on motorways.

During the meeting, lawmakers criticized PIA for its soaring ticket prices. MNA Shagufta Jumani said, “A one-way PIA ticket from Karachi to Islamabad now costs no less than Rs. 60,000. I’ve stopped traveling with PIA because it’s unaffordable.” In response, PIA officials stated that average fares between Karachi and Islamabad range between Rs. 25,000 and Rs. 27,000.

The committee also raised concerns about the lack of medical facilities on motorways. Chairperson Nuzhat Sadiq highlighted that even basic medicines are unavailable during emergencies. She instructed authorities to ensure life-saving drugs are provided at service counters immediately.

Lawmakers questioned the National Highway Authority (NHA) regarding its responsibilities and the use of toll tax revenue. The committee emphasized that if the public is paying tolls, then it is NHA’s duty to provide adequate services, including medical facilities. Members demanded a detailed explanation from NHA about revenue collection, contract management, and pricing discrepancies.

The session underscored the need for greater accountability in public service providers. Lawmakers insisted that both PIA and NHA take urgent steps to address public grievances related to high fares and insufficient motorway facilities.

Officials were asked to submit detailed reports to the committee within the next two weeks. The National Assembly committee emphasized that citizens should receive safe, affordable, and reliable services from both PIA and motorway authorities.

The discussion reflects ongoing concerns about service quality and affordability in Pakistan’s transportation sector, highlighting the need for regulatory oversight and better resource management.
