ISLAMABAD: The National Disaster Management Authority has issued a flood warning for several northern areas. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds are expected over the next 72 hours.
The warning covers Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Authorities have been directed to remain alert and take preventive measures.
According to the latest advisory, intense rainfall could quickly increase water levels. Rivers, streams, and seasonal nullahs may experience sudden rises.
Mountainous areas face additional risks from landslides and flash floods. Debris flows could also affect vulnerable locations after heavy rainfall.
In Gilgit-Baltistan, several districts have been identified as high-risk areas. These include Gilgit, Diamer, Ghizer, Hunza, Astore, Skardu, and Shigar.
Several districts in Azad Jammu and Kashmir could also face flooding. These include Bagh, Poonch, Muzaffarabad, Haveli, Bhimber, Sudhanoti, Mirpur, and Kotli.
In Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, authorities have identified several vulnerable districts. These include Chitral, Dir, Swat, Bajaur, Mohmand, Shangla, and Battagram.
Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, and Haripur are also at risk. Heavy rainfall could trigger sudden flooding in these areas.
Urban flooding is another concern during the forecast period. Nowshera, Peshawar, Swabi, and Mardan could experience water accumulation.
Low-lying areas and roads may be particularly vulnerable to flooding. Residents have been advised to remain cautious during heavy rainfall.
The National Emergency Operations Centre has also forecast increased river flows. The Indus, Kabul, Swat, Panjkora, Kurram, and Tochi rivers may rise.
Higher flows are also expected in the Jhelum, Chenab, and Ravi rivers. Water levels could increase at different points along these rivers.
Rawalpindi and Islamabad could also face a heightened flood risk. Rainfall may significantly increase water flow in Nullah Lai.
The NDMA has urged local authorities to strengthen preparedness measures. Essential resources should be placed in vulnerable locations before conditions worsen.
Authorities have also been asked to prepare safe evacuation arrangements. These measures are intended to protect communities in flood-prone areas.
The NDMA has advised residents and tourists to avoid riverbanks and streams. People should also stay away from seasonal waterways during heavy rainfall.

The authority has warned against crossing flooded roads and bridges. People should also avoid attempting to cross fast-moving water.
