ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Dr Tariq Fazal Chaudhry has rejected reports of a smart lockdown in Islamabad. He said no such proposal was discussed during a meeting chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar.

Speaking to the media, Chaudhry said he was unaware of any plan for a smart lockdown. He also clarified that Islamabad would not be shut down.

The minister said the meeting mainly focused on petroleum products and a targeted subsidy. The subsidy will support three-wheelers and vehicles with engines up to 800cc.

According to Chaudhry, the subsidy will remain available for three months. Public representatives will also help create awareness about the government relief package.

He said several political marches were being discussed for September. However, he stressed that there was no plan to close Islamabad.

Chaudhry also criticised previous PTI marches towards the federal capital. He described them as violent and disorderly compared with peaceful political activities.

The minister referred to a recent ruling by the Islamabad High Court. He said the court directed authorities to keep public movement unhindered.

He added that political leaders should not be allowed to occupy public places. According to him, the administration is carrying out its responsibilities under the court’s directions.

Chaudhry questioned the repeated marches towards Islamabad under the name of peaceful protests. He asked whether arriving in the capital could actually change the country’s system.

The minister also addressed political dialogue with the opposition. He said Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had invited opposition parties for talks several times.

Chaudhry said political pressure alone would not force the prime minister to resign. He argued that demanding a resignation at the prime minister’s residence would not automatically change the government.

The federal minister also commented on political scenes witnessed in Lahore recently. He described the events as a sign of political immaturity.

He also criticised what he called disrespect toward public office. Chaudhry said chief ministers hold important constitutional positions.

He stressed that all chief ministers deserve respect. He also said they should maintain the dignity associated with their offices.

The minister’s comments came amid discussion about security and political activity in Islamabad. His statement sought to clarify that no smart lockdown had been proposed.

For now, authorities have not announced any plan to shut down the federal capital. The government continues to focus on the targeted fuel subsidy and preparations for upcoming political activities.
