The Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has reported that over 50 schools in Punjab have fallen victim to solar panel thefts. These incidents have left educational institutions without a reliable power source, disrupting the learning environment for students.
According to the PAC, the thefts have primarily affected government-run schools in rural areas. The stolen solar panels were part of the Khadim-e-Punjab Ujala Scheme, an initiative aimed at providing uninterrupted electricity to schools. However, the absence of security measures at these institutions has made them vulnerable to such criminal activities.
In response to the PAC’s findings, the Punjab School Education Department has acknowledged the issue and is taking steps to address it. The department has initiated an investigation to identify the perpetrators and recover the stolen equipment. Additionally, plans are underway to enhance security at schools to prevent future incidents.
The thefts have raised concerns about the effectiveness of the solarization project and the need for improved infrastructure security. Stakeholders emphasize the importance of safeguarding educational resources to ensure that students have access to a conducive learning environment.
