A shocking case has emerged in Pakistan involving a man who returned home after years abroad. Overseas Pakistani Comes Home and Learns NADRA Reportedly Declared Him Dead when he tried to sort out his identity records. The discovery left him unable to access basic services or prove his identity.
Imran Malik, who lived overseas for four years, returned to Pakistan in October. He planned to reconnect with family and settle personal matters. But when he tried to open a bank account, officials told him his identity card was blocked. Further checks revealed he had been officially listed as deceased since April 2024.
Overseas Pakistani Comes Home and Learns NADRA Reportedly Declared Him Dead due to what he says was a false death declaration. Malik claimed that members of his own family were behind the falsified report. According to his petition in the Sindh High Court, the fake declaration was used to seize control of his property and assets. Authorities have registered a criminal case against the relatives accused of fraud.
Malikโs lawyer stated that his passport remained valid, which allowed him to travel back despite being declared dead on record. However, he cannot return overseas because of the legal complications with his identity.
The lawyer asked the court to order NADRA to restore Malikโs Computerized National Identity Card (CNIC) and correct all official records. Action is also requested against those responsible for the fraudulent death declaration.
During the hearing, the judge questioned how Malik could enter Pakistan if he was officially recorded as dead. The court issued notices to NADRA and other authorities, giving them four weeks to explain the situation and outline steps to correct the records.
Legal experts said this unusual case highlights potential weaknesses in record-keeping systems. They emphasized the need for stronger safeguards and stricter checks before declaring someone dead in national databases.
Malikโs case has drawn attention from human rights advocates and civil society groups. Many believe the courtโs decision could set an important precedent for similar cases and protect the rights of overseas Pakistanis.
For now, Malik and his legal team await the courtโs decision, hoping to clear his name and restore his legal identity so he can live without the burden of being wrongfully declared dead.
