Punjab Assembly Speaker has called for the immediate passage of the 27th Amendment to strengthen and empower local governments across the province. The move aims to ensure that local bodies have more autonomy in decision-making, resource allocation, and service delivery.
During a recent assembly session, the Speaker emphasized that the 27th Amendment is essential for promoting good governance and improving public welfare at the grassroots level. He stated that empowering local representatives will allow faster responses to citizensβ issues and better development planning.
He further highlighted that the current administrative system centralizes too much power, leaving local institutions dependent on provincial authorities for funding and approvals. The proposed amendment seeks to decentralize these powers and make local councils more effective and financially independent.
Lawmakers from both the treasury and opposition benches expressed mixed reactions. Some supported the amendment, calling it a βlong-overdue reform,β while others demanded more discussion on its implementation mechanism.
The Speaker also urged all political parties to work together to pass the 27th Amendment with consensus, noting that strong local governments are vital for democracy and efficient governance.
Political analysts believe that if passed, the amendment could redefine Pakistanβs local governance structure by giving more authority to municipal and district bodies, improving transparency and accountability.
