Pakistan And Canada Discuss Strengthening Trade And Economic Cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar spoke with Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Friday to discuss strengthening trade and investment between the two countries. The call focused on key sectors such as agriculture, mines, and minerals, along with enhancing collaboration under the Foreign Investment Promotion and Protection Agreement (FIPPA).

Foreign Minister Anand expressed appreciation for Pakistan’s facilitation of market access for Canadian canola exports. Both leaders highlighted recent constructive engagements and reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening trade ties through mutually beneficial initiatives. They agreed to maintain close contact to support ongoing economic cooperation.

Earlier, Federal Minister for National Food Security and Research Rana Tanveer Hussain met with Canadian High Commissioner H.E. Tarik Ali Khan to explore further opportunities in agricultural cooperation and trade facilitation. Both sides emphasized the potential for collaboration in agriculture, food safety, and technology transfer.

Minister Hussain noted that Pakistan and Canada have long-standing relations built on mutual respect and development cooperation. He stressed that agriculture is a strategic area where both countries can complement each other’s strengths. With Pakistan’s population exceeding 250 million, the country presents significant opportunities for Canadian exports and joint ventures in agricultural technology, processing, and value addition.

The Minister also highlighted Pakistan’s efforts to diversify edible oil imports. By reducing reliance on palm oil, valued at over USD 4 billion annually, and promoting canola and soybean oils, Pakistan aims to improve health standards and environmental sustainability. He added that domestic canola cultivation is being encouraged to increase farmer income, enable import substitution, and expand local processing industries. Support is being provided through technology transfer, market facilitation, and investment incentives.

These initiatives reflect Pakistan’s broader vision for economic growth and strengthening trade with international partners. Both countries agreed to continue working closely to boost bilateral trade, investment, and agricultural collaboration, creating opportunities for businesses and farmers alike.
