Pakistan Approves Transition To e-Passports For Modernization

Pakistan has taken a major step toward modernizing its travel document system. The government has decided to gradually shift to e-Passports nationwide.

The decision was finalized in a high-level meeting held in Islamabad. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi chaired the session at the Passport and Immigration Headquarters.

Officials confirmed that the government approves the gradual replacement of traditional passports with advanced e-Passports. The move is part of broader administrative reforms.

The meeting also approves key upgrades to improve security and efficiency in the passport system. Authorities said these changes will help reduce fraud and identity theft.

According to officials, the new system will offer faster processing and improved digital services for citizens. It will also strengthen document verification standards.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi stated that e-Passports will help eliminate forgery and misuse of travel documents. He emphasized the importance of secure identity systems.

The government also approves plans for premium passport services. These services will allow faster processing for applicants willing to pay additional fees.

Officials briefed the meeting on plans to introduce home delivery of passports. This service will be available both within Pakistan and abroad in the near future.

A cashless payment system will also be introduced at all passport offices from July 1. This is aimed at improving transparency and convenience.

Authorities further approved the transfer of online applications to the Pak-ID platform. This step will help centralize and simplify digital services.

The interior minister directed officials to finalize the Business Passport Policy in consultation with relevant departments. Work on the policy is expected to be completed soon.

The Director General of Passports and Immigration provided a detailed briefing on ongoing reforms. He outlined future plans for system upgrades.

Pakistan initially introduced e-Passports to align with international standards. The document contains an embedded electronic chip with biometric data.

The chip includes personal identification details, digital signatures, and verification information. It can be read electronically through contactless technology.

Equipped with advanced security features, the e-Passport ensures protection against tampering. It also speeds up immigration clearance at airports.

Officials believe these reforms will significantly improve service delivery and strengthen national security systems across the country.
