RAWALPINDI – A dispute has emerged over Indian reports about a man allegedly killed in Indian-administered Kashmir. Indian media identified the man as Mohammad Asif, also known as Hashim Moosa. Reports linked him to Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) and the 2025 Pahalgam attack.

The reports also claimed that Asif was a former Pakistan Army soldier. They described him as a former Havildar and Special Services Group (SSG) commando. However, Pakistan has challenged the identity and claims surrounding the reported killing. The issue was discussed during a briefing involving DG ISPR Lt Gen Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry.

Dispute Over Identity

According to Indian reports, security forces killed a suspected militant during an operation in the Korag-Yousmarg area. The Indian Army later identified the body as Mohammad Asif alias Hashim Moosa. Indian authorities described him as a Pakistan-based LeT operative. They also linked him to several attacks in Jammu and Kashmir.

Indian reports claimed that Asif joined the Pakistan Army in 2000. They further alleged that he later served with the SSG. The reports attributed these details to security sources. They claimed he served with the 4 Commando “Yalgar” Battalion.

Further claims linked him to deployments in Balochistan. Indian media also reported alleged service on the security detail of former president Pervez Musharraf.

These details became part of the wider narrative surrounding the reported militant. However, some reports acknowledged that the detailed military history came from sources. It was not independently verified through Pakistani military records.

Link to Pahalgam Attack

Indian authorities had previously identified Hashim Moosa as a suspect linked to the Pahalgam attack. The April 2025 attack killed 26 people, according to Indian authorities.

Indian reporting said Moosa was among the individuals wanted by security agencies. The Jammu and Kashmir Police had also announced a reward for information leading to his arrest. Indian officials later said the man was killed during Operation Korag. The operation involved the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and the Central Reserve Police Force.

According to the Indian Army’s Chinar Corps, troops detected suspicious movement during the operation. An exchange of fire followed. The army later said the body was recovered from the Palmaidan area. It also reported recovering war-like stores from the site.

Pakistan Army Claims Under Dispute

The reports about the man’s alleged military background have drawn particular attention in Pakistan. The Pakistan Army’s name was repeatedly used in Indian reporting about the alleged former commando. Those reports presented the alleged military history as part of the man’s profile.

Pakistan has disputed the broader Indian narrative surrounding the incident. The controversy centers on the identity of the deceased man and claims made about his alleged background. Indian media reports have continued to describe Mohammad Asif as a former Pakistan Army serviceman. Meanwhile, Pakistani officials have challenged the claims surrounding the reported killing.

The incident has therefore become a point of dispute between the two sides. The competing accounts contain significant differences about the man’s identity and alleged history. The case also shows how conflicting claims can emerge following security operations in disputed areas. Claims attributed to officials and unnamed sources should be distinguished from independently verified facts.
