Pakistan, Denmark Advance $2B Green Maritime Partnership

Pakistan and Denmark on Monday reaffirmed their commitment to a $2 billion collaboration focused on upgrading Pakistan’s maritime infrastructure and integrating green shipping practices. The initiative, led by Danish shipping giant AP Moller–Maersk, aims to modernise port operations, boost trade competitiveness, and drive environmental sustainability.

During a meeting in Islamabad, Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Junaid Anwar Chaudhry and Danish Ambassador Jakob Linulf agreed to fast-track the implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding signed last year. Key areas of focus include logistics upgrades, renewable energy integration at ports, and energy-efficient shipping solutions.

Minister Chaudhry emphasized that transitioning to sustainable maritime technologies will not only reduce emissions but also enhance operational efficiency. Solar and wind energy are expected to power future port operations, cutting fossil fuel dependence.

The plan also includes training programs for maritime workers to operate eco-friendly vessels and port systems. Chaudhry noted that these reforms would strengthen Pakistan’s global trading profile and support long-term economic growth.

Maersk CEO Vincent Clerc is expected to visit Pakistan this week to hold high-level talks with the Prime Minister and other senior officials, further accelerating the initiative.
