Pakistan And Iran Edge Closer To Signing Landmark Free Trade Agreement

Pakistan and Iran are moving closer to signing a Free Trade Agreement (FTA), as the finalised text of the accord is now under review by Pakistani authorities. Officials said the agreement is expected to receive official approval soon, marking a major step toward deepening economic cooperation between the two neighbours.

The update came during a meeting between Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan and Iranian Ambassador to Pakistan Reza Amiri-Moghaddam. The two discussed ongoing efforts to enhance trade, economic cooperation, and connectivity between Pakistan and Iran, according to an official statement.

Jam Kamal confirmed that the draft of the Pakistan-Iran Free Trade Agreement has been signed in Islamabad and is currently being reviewed internally. Once approved, it will pave the way for broader trade opportunities and smoother cross-border transactions.

Ambassador Amiri welcomed the development and announced the resumption of flights between Quetta and Zahedan, which he said would boost people-to-people and trade linkages. He also highlighted Iran’s completion of rice imports from Pakistan and readiness to buy more animal feed and maize under previous trade agreements.

The Iranian envoy recalled earlier deals involving the import of 400,000 tons of rice, 300,000 tons of meat, 200,000 tons of maize, and 50,000 tons of animal feed.

Minister Jam Kamal invited Iranian companies to participate in the upcoming FoodAg Exhibition, scheduled from November 25 to 27, 2025, at the Karachi Expo Center. He noted that such events create opportunities for both countries to strengthen investment and cooperation in agriculture and food industries.

He also proposed high-level visits, including those of the Balochistan Chief Minister and the Governor of Zahedan, to support cross-border trade. The minister called for activating the Pakistan-Iran Joint Business Council to promote direct B2B engagement.

Both sides expressed satisfaction over growing economic ties and reaffirmed their commitment to achieving US$10 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2028. They also discussed ongoing efforts to reduce non-tariff barriers and accelerate the operationalisation of joint border markets.

The meeting reflected a shared vision between Pakistan and Iran to build a stronger, more integrated regional economy based on mutual cooperation and sustainable growth.
