Pakistan Launches Bold Step Toward Regulating Digital Assets

In a groundbreaking initiative, Pakistan’s Ministry of Finance has unveiled a national strategy to regulate digital assets, aiming to transform the country into a hub for blockchain innovation and responsible financial growth. At the heart of this strategy is the formation of the Pakistan Digital Assets Authority (PDAA), a new regulatory body designed to oversee and guide the digital asset ecosystem.

The PDAA will take charge of licensing and compliance for crypto exchanges, wallets, stablecoins, DeFi platforms, and other blockchain-based financial infrastructure. The goal, as outlined by the ministry, is to ensure innovation within a framework that aligns with global standards, especially those set by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF).

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb emphasized that the PDAA represents more than just regulation—it’s a forward-looking policy to expand access to finance, attract investment, and enable Pakistan’s youth to build global blockchain solutions. He noted that Pakistan is positioning itself alongside countries like the UAE and Singapore that are already leading in digital finance.

Beyond crypto regulation, the PDAA is expected to legalize and formalize a $25 billion informal market, enable tokenization of national assets, and even allow regulated bitcoin mining to monetize surplus electricity. Entrepreneurs, investors, and tech innovators are expected to benefit from the clarity and opportunity this new framework provides.

In a separate development, the finance minister also met with Dutch Ambassador Henny de Vries to discuss economic reforms and investment opportunities. The ambassador welcomed Pakistan’s macroeconomic direction and reaffirmed the Netherlands’ support for deepening bilateral cooperation across key sectors.
