Has Govt Restored Old Speed Limits on Motorways in Pakistan?

Has Govt Restored Old Speed Limits on Motorways in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD โ€“ The National Highways and Motorway Police (NHMP) has rejected reports claiming that the previous 120 km/h motorway speed limit has been restored in Pakistan.

The clarification came after several posts circulated on social media and online platforms suggesting that authorities had brought back the old speed rules for cars and light transport vehicles.

According to the NHMP, these claims are incorrect. The existing Speed Limits on motorways are still in place and no official decision has been made to increase them.

The government reduced motorway speed limits in March 2026 as part of measures to conserve fuel and improve energy efficiency. The decision was taken during a period of rising global oil prices.

Under the revised regulations, the speed limit for cars and light transport vehicles (LTVs) was reduced from 120 km/h to 100 km/h. The limit for passenger vehicles and heavy transport vehicles was also decreased.

Before the change, passenger and heavy transport vehicles were allowed to travel at a maximum speed of 110 km/h. Under the new rules, their limit was reduced to 90 km/h.

The NHMP said these updated Speed Limits continue to apply on motorways across the country. Drivers are advised to follow the current restrictions to avoid penalties and ensure road safety.

Recent online reports created confusion among motorists by claiming that the government had reversed the speed reduction policy. However, a Motorway Police spokesperson confirmed that no such notification has been issued.

Officials said any changes to motorway regulations would be announced through official channels. Until then, drivers must follow the existing speed limits introduced earlier this year.

The reduction in Speed Limits was introduced as part of broader steps aimed at reducing fuel consumption. Authorities had linked the decision with efforts to manage energy use during challenging global market conditions.

The NHMP continues to monitor motorway traffic and enforce road safety regulations. Officials have urged citizens not to rely on unverified information shared on social media.

Motorway users are advised to check official announcements before making assumptions about changes in traffic rules. The current speed restrictions will remain effective unless a new decision is formally announced.
