Pakistan has officially named its first lunar rover “Jinnah-1” following a nationwide naming competition.
The Pakistan Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission (SUPARCO) announced the name after reviewing more than 4,000 proposals.
A jury examined the entries submitted by people from across the country. The selected name pays tribute to Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
Jinnah-1 to Travel to Moon in 2029
Pakistan’s first lunar rover is scheduled to travel to the Moon in 2029. It will be part of China’s Chang’E-8 mission.
The rover is expected to land near the Moon’s south pole. It has been locally developed for scientific research and exploration.
Jinnah-1 will carry advanced scientific equipment for lunar studies. Its instruments will examine lunar plasma and radiation.
The rover will also help map geological features on the Moon’s surface. It will conduct experiments linked to future lunar research.

Name Reflects Quaid-e-Azam’s Vision
The name Jinnah-1 honors Pakistan’s founder, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah.
SUPARCO said the name reflects his vision of a progressive and forward-looking nation. The commission also highlighted strong public interest in the naming competition.
More than 4,000 naming proposals were received from across Pakistan. The response showed growing public interest in the country’s space programme.
Seven participants independently proposed the name “Jinnah-1.” A lucky draw was later conducted to select the winner among them.
17-Year-Old Student Wins Competition
Seventeen-year-old Tayyab Karim from Bahawalnagar was declared the winner.
The winner was selected during a special ceremony. The lucky draw ensured a fair selection among the seven participants.
SUPARCO Chairman Muhammad Yousuf Khan praised the public response to the competition. He also highlighted the national importance of naming the lunar rover.
He said Jinnah-1 represents resilience, determination, and the pursuit of progress.
The chairman noted that the name carries a broader message for Pakistan. It reflects the country’s ambition to enter new areas of scientific exploration.
