Pakistan Powers Ahead With 2,000 MW Allocation for Bitcoin Mining and AI Data Centres

Pakistan has launched a groundbreaking initiative by allocating 2,000 megawatts (MW) of electricity to support Bitcoin mining and artificial intelligence (AI) data centres, marking a major step in its digital innovation ambitions. The first phase of this national strategy aims to transform surplus energy into economic growth, high-tech job creation, and increased foreign investment, according to a press release from the Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC).

Spearheaded by the Finance Ministry and the PCC, this move is designed to repurpose Pakistan’s underutilised power capacity into a valuable digital asset. Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb described the effort as a pivotal moment that leverages Pakistan’s strategic geographic location to become a global hub for data flow between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

The initiative has already attracted attention from international Bitcoin miners and data infrastructure companies, with several global firms visiting Pakistan for exploratory talks. The PCC anticipates even greater international interest following this announcement, as Pakistan’s idle energy resources now support energy-intensive operations like Bitcoin mining and AI data processing.

PCC CEO Bilal Bin Saqib highlighted that with proper regulation and transparency, Pakistan could emerge as a global leader in crypto and AI sectors. He also pointed out the potential for Pakistan to accumulate Bitcoin directly into a national wallet, shifting from traditional currency sales to leveraging digital assets for economic stability.

With over 40 million crypto users domestically, the establishment of local AI data centres will further strengthen Pakistan’s digital infrastructure by addressing data sovereignty concerns, enhancing cybersecurity, and improving service delivery. This strategic energy allocation represents a transformative step toward Pakistan’s vision of becoming a powerhouse in digital innovation.
