Pakistan Railways has announced a 50 percent discount on train fares for spouses of working journalists, aiming to provide financial relief to the media community.
According to an official notification approved by senior management, eligible journalists’ wives can avail the concession on up to 10 single journeys. The discount will be applicable across most trains and travel classes nationwide.
However, the concession will not apply to premium services such as Green Line, Pak Business Express, and Shah Hussain Express. These exclusions ensure the subsidy is targeted toward regular travel services.
Officials stated that applicants must provide the required documentation to benefit from the scheme. The initiative is designed to reduce travel expenses for journalists’ families during ongoing economic challenges.
The relief package comes amid rising fuel prices, which have increased transportation costs across the country. On the direction of Shehbaz Sharif, authorities have decided not to increase train fares despite mounting pressure.
In addition, freight charges will remain unchanged to help control inflation, while the government will bear an estimated Rs6 billion financial burden until June. Railways Minister Hanif Abbasi said the move aims to keep travel affordable and accessible for citizens.
