Pakistan reports decline in polio virus samples in latest environmental checks

Islamabad, August 12, 2025 – In a positive sign, Pakistan reports decline in polio virus samples in its latest environmental surveillance. Out of 127 sewage samples collected from 87 districts, only 42 tested positive for poliovirus, while 75 samples were virus-free and 10 remain pending. This marks a key moment in the country’s polio surveillance efforts.

In Balochistan, 22 of 23 samples came back negative. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa saw 24 clean samples and seven positive ones. Punjab had 15 negative and 12 positive results. In Sindh, 19 samples were clear, while 10 were still positive. Islamabad recorded both samples as virus-free. All samples from Azad Jammu & Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan tested negative.

This progress was confirmed by the National Institute of Health’s Polio Regional Laboratory in Islamabad. It plays a pivotal role in environmental surveillance and early detection of poliovirus.

Still, challenges remain. Pakistan has confirmed 19 polio cases in 2025. More than 60% of these are in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This highlights persistent gaps in immunization, awareness, and access in that region.

Health officials note that Pakistan reports decline in polio virus samples should not lead to complacency. The drop in positive samples is encouraging but limited. The virus is still circulating in several areas. Surveillance, vaccination, and public awareness must stay strong.

In recent months, the country conducted multiple immunization campaigns. Thanks to the efforts of over 400,000 frontline workers, more than 45 million children under five have been targeted for protection.

Global partners continue to support Pakistan’s eradication efforts. The decline in polio virus samples may reflect improvements from coordinated actions. Still, health experts warn that only sustained campaigns and strong community trust can secure permanent gains.
