Pakistan Secures UN Approval for Islamophobia Envoy’s Office Funding

Pakistan has achieved consensus within the Fifth Committee of the UN General Assembly, securing funding for the newly established Office of the Special Envoy on Combating Islamophobia. Officials confirmed on Saturday that the resolution for revised budget estimates was adopted without a vote during the closing session of the first part of the 79th UNGA.

In delivering Pakistan’s national statement, Jibran Khan Durrani, First Secretary at the UN Mission, expressed gratitude to international partners, including the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), the G77, and China, for their support. He highlighted that the outcome represented a victory for collective diplomacy and inclusivity, with Pakistan playing a lead role as one of the key negotiators in the committee’s discussions.

The newly funded Office of the Special Envoy on Combating Islamophobia will become operational from the 1st of next month. The envoy will be tasked with monitoring global trends of Islamophobia, reporting incidents, and advising on measures to combat religious intolerance. This initiative is part of the UN’s broader efforts to address religious discrimination worldwide.

This development marks another milestone for Pakistan’s multilateral efforts, building on its success in designating March 15 as the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.
