Pakistan is reportedly moving closer to entering the Stealth era with plans to acquire Chinaโs advanced J-35 fighter jets. The development is being viewed as a major step in the countryโs defence modernization efforts.
According to reports, Pakistan could become the first international customer for the fifth-generation J-35 stealth fighter. The proposed deal is said to involve up to 40 aircraft.
The move signals a significant shift toward the Stealth era for the Pakistan Air Force (PAF). It is also part of a broader strategy to strengthen aerial and strategic capabilities.
Reports suggest the agreement extends beyond fighter jets. The package may also include KJ-500 airborne early warning and control aircraft and HQ-19 air defence systems.
These additions could enhance surveillance, command capabilities, and air defence coverage. Together, they form an important part of Pakistanโs future military planning.
Sources indicate that pilot training has already started in China. Pakistani personnel are reportedly undergoing preparations to operate the advanced aircraft.
At the same time, infrastructure upgrades are underway at selected PAF bases. Ground crews are also receiving training to support the new systems.
The expected acquisition is considered a major milestone in Pakistanโs transition into the Stealth era. Analysts believe it could significantly improve operational flexibility.
The J-35 was developed by Chinaโs Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. It was publicly showcased during the 2024 Zhuhai Airshow.
The aircraft features a twin-engine design and advanced stealth characteristics. Its low-observable structure is intended to reduce radar detection.
The fighter also includes internal weapons bays and modern combat systems. These features have drawn comparisons with the American F-35 Lightning II.
According to available specifications, the J-35 is around 17.3 meters long with a wingspan of 11.5 meters. It can reportedly reach speeds close to Mach 1.8.
The aircraft is capable of carrying air-to-air missiles, land-attack weapons, and anti-radiation missiles. Most of these weapons can be stored internally.
The planned purchase further reflects Pakistanโs growing reliance on Chinese military technology. The country has already inducted J-10C fighter jets into its fleet.
Defence analysts believe the Stealth era could reshape Pakistanโs future air combat capabilities. The reported procurement package is estimated to be worth several billion dollars.
If finalized, the deal would represent one of Pakistanโs most significant military acquisitions in recent years and reinforce defence cooperation with China.
