At UN, Pakistan Assails India Over ‘Weaponisation’ of Indus Water Treaty

Pakistan strongly criticized India at the United Nations, accusing it of the “weaponisation” of the Indus Water Treaty (IWT) — a key agreement governing water sharing between the two countries.

Speaking during a UN session, Pakistan’s representative said India’s unilateral actions on shared rivers violated international norms and the 1960 treaty, which was brokered by the World Bank. He stressed that New Delhi’s ongoing projects on the western rivers threaten Pakistan’s water security and agricultural sustainability.

The envoy warned that such steps could escalate regional tensions, urging the UN and global partners to ensure India’s compliance with its treaty obligations. He added that Pakistan had repeatedly raised concerns over India’s hydropower and dam projects that alter river flows into Pakistani territory.

The Indus Water Treaty, signed more than six decades ago, allocates control over three eastern rivers to India and three western rivers to Pakistan. Pakistan maintains that India’s recent construction activity violates this delicate balance, undermining the spirit of cooperation and mutual respect that the treaty represents.

Experts say the dispute highlights growing water stress in South Asia, as climate change intensifies competition over transboundary resources. Analysts warn that without dialogue and trust-building, the issue could deepen mistrust between the two nuclear-armed neighbors.

Pakistan reaffirmed its commitment to the peaceful resolution of water-related disputes but said it would continue to raise the issue on international platforms if India fails to honor its commitments.
