Pakistan is preparing to welcome 50,000 Russian tourists each year, targeting $1 billion in tourism revenue. The move comes as global travel patterns shift and some Middle Eastern destinations face instability.
The countryโs natural beauty, improved infrastructure, and eased visa rules make it an attractive option for Russian tourists seeking safe and affordable destinations. Government initiatives and new hotel projects are designed to support this growing tourism opportunity.
Pakistanโs Ambassador to Russia, Faisal Niaz Tirmizi, said global unrest and economic uncertainty are pushing travelers toward safer locations. โCountries in Eastern Europe and Russia are looking for alternatives, and Pakistan is emerging as a prime choice,โ he noted.
Historically, Russians traveled to Turkey, Egypt, Thailand, Malaysia, and India, spending $1,000โ$5,000 per trip over one to two weeks. By attracting Russian tourists, Pakistan hopes to capture part of this lucrative market and generate up to $1 billion annually.
Tirmizi highlighted that Pakistan could start with smaller tour groups, gradually scaling to 50,000 visitors per year. He also emphasized that Russian President Vladimir Putin sees Pakistan as a friendly nation, supporting stronger ties in tourism, business, and culture.
Tourism reforms have already made Pakistan more accessible. Visa facilities now cover travelers from 126 countries, and the โTourism on the Palmโ platform provides online guidance. Several tourism projects have been completed, while ten new hotels and resorts are planned in Gadani, Sonmiani, and Hunza for 2026โ27.
Northern Pakistan, including Hazara Division, Skardu, and Hunza, is being positioned as a hub for adventure and cultural tourism. Improved connectivity and regional flights could make the country a transit hub between Asia, Europe, and Africa.
Ambassador Tirmizi called for a coordinated marketing push using digital campaigns, films, low-cost carriers, and strong branding to attract Russian tourists. He stressed that careful planning by tour operators and visitor services is essential to meet growing demand.
With one million international tourists visiting Pakistan in 2025, the country aims to strengthen its position as a safe, affordable, and culturally rich destination for Russian travelers.
