For the first time in the country’s history, Pakistan will witness a blood moon next month, the Meteorological Department confirmed Thursday.
According to reports, a total lunar eclipse will occur on the night of September 7 to 8, 2025. The penumbral phase will begin at 8:28 PM, followed by a partial lunar eclipse at 9:27 PM.
The eclipse will reach its peak at 11:12 PM, while the partial phase will end at 12:57 AM. The total lunar eclipse is expected to conclude at 1:55 AM on September 8.
The entire event will last for 5 hours and 27 minutes, making it one of the longest lunar eclipses of the decade. During this time, the moon will turn a striking deep red, creating the spectacular phenomenon known as a blood moon.
This rare celestial event will be visible across Pakistan and most parts of Asia, Europe, Africa, Australia, and the Pacific region. However, it will not be visible in the United States.
Astronomers have called the September 2025 eclipse a unique opportunity for skywatchers, as nearly 88 percent of the world’s population will be able to see it.
Experts explain that the blood-red colour occurs when the Earth comes directly between the sun and the moon, blocking sunlight. The light passing through Earth’s atmosphere scatters, allowing only red wavelengths to illuminate the moon’s surface.
Earlier this year, the first lunar eclipse of 2025 occurred on March 14. However, it was not visible in Pakistan as it took place during daytime.
Skywatchers are advised to prepare in advance for the blood moon, which promises to be a breathtaking astronomical event. Binoculars or telescopes can enhance the viewing experience, though the phenomenon can also be observed with the naked eye.
This historic blood moon is expected to draw interest from astronomy enthusiasts and the general public alike, marking a memorable night for Pakistan’s skywatchers.
