Pakistani nurses and other healthcare professionals are set to gain new pathways for pursuing professional licensing, training and career opportunities in the United States under an agreement being signed between two education and healthcare-focused organisations.
The APPAC Foundation and Pakistan Education Endowment Fund (Pak-EEF) are set to sign a Memorandum of Understanding in New York, according to documents detailing the partnership.
APPAC Foundation President Dr. Ijaz Ahmad and Pak-EEF Chief Executive Officer Syeda Hajra Sohail will sign the agreement.
What Will the Agreement Do?
The partnership is designed to develop structured pathways for qualified nurses and other healthcare professionals from Pakistan.
These pathways will cover education and training as well as requirements related to professional credentials and licensing. Access to employment and broader professional opportunities in the United States is also part of the planned cooperation.
The two organisations will work to establish links with US healthcare and educational institutions, hospitals, nursing facilities, professional organisations and potential employers.
The agreement does not, however, amount to a guarantee of employment in the United States.
More Than 80 Pakistani Nurses Secure NCLEX Licences
The partnership builds on an existing NCLEX Nurse Placement Programme launched by Pak-EEF under a government initiative.
The programme attracted 2,759 registrations, from which 300 eligible nurses were selected for training following screening.
More than 80 Pakistani nurses have obtained NCLEX licences so far, according to the information provided. Another 220-plus nurses are at different stages of the examination process.
A major feature of the programme is the ability for candidates to prepare for and take the examination process in Pakistan, reducing the need to travel overseas solely for the costly exam process.
Training and Scholarships Also on the Agenda
The new agreement extends beyond licensing.
APPAC and Pak-EEF plan to cooperate in nursing and medical education, faculty development, professional and training exchanges, and healthcare workforce preparation.
They will also explore possibilities for scholarships, educational assistance and training partnerships.
APPAC previously worked on the project with New York State Assembly Deputy Speaker Phil Ramos. Its board members have made two visits to Pakistan for discussions with relevant institutions on nursing, medical education, workforce development and professional training.
