Pakistan is preparing for its first human spaceflight mission with China. Two pilots are currently undergoing training in Beijing for the planned mission.
Zeeshan Ali and Khurram Daud were selected from around 20 finalists. They are now receiving intensive training for a potential journey to China’s Tiangong Space Station.
The training covers several areas linked to human spaceflight. These include spacecraft systems, Mandarin language skills and microgravity procedures.
The pilots are also learning about gravitational forces during launch. Such training is designed to prepare them for the physical conditions of spaceflight.
Pakistan’s national space agency, Suparco, is overseeing the selection process. The agency expects to choose the final astronaut by mid-to-late October.
China has not yet announced the date of the planned mission. The final schedule will depend on mission planning and other technical preparations.
The selected astronaut will reportedly serve as a payload specialist. The role will focus on conducting scientific experiments during the mission.
The experiments are expected to focus on food security and climate change. These areas are important research priorities for Pakistan and other countries.
The planned mission would represent a major development in Pakistan’s space programme. It would also mark Pakistan’s first human spaceflight.
The mission would have significance for China as well. It would reportedly be the first Chinese spaceflight to carry a foreign astronaut.
