Pakistan’s Textile Exports Down 2% to $1.573 Billion in September

Pakistan’s textile exports witnessed a slight decline in September 2025, falling by 2% to $1.573 billion compared to $1.606 billion in the same month last year. The decrease highlights the continued challenges faced by the textile industry, which remains one of Pakistan’s largest sources of foreign exchange.

According to data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS), the decline in exports was driven mainly by reduced demand in international markets and rising production costs. Experts attribute the slowdown to global economic uncertainty, higher energy prices, and competition from regional exporters like Bangladesh and India.

Despite the monthly decline, cumulative textile exports for the first quarter of the current fiscal year (July–September) stood at $4.78 billion, showing a modest recovery compared to the previous quarter. However, industry officials warn that sustaining growth will require consistent energy supply, currency stability, and government support in the form of export incentives.

Major textile segments, including knitwear, bedwear, and readymade garments, reported mixed performance. While knitwear exports saw a marginal increase, exports of cotton cloth and towels dropped due to weaker global demand.

The All Pakistan Textile Mills Association (APTMA) has urged the government to address the rising cost of doing business and ensure a level playing field with regional competitors. APTMA representatives emphasized that improving infrastructure, reducing power tariffs, and ensuring timely refunds could help stabilize export figures in the coming months.

As the global textile market continues to face headwinds, Pakistan’s exporters remain cautiously optimistic. They expect improvement once international orders pick up during the winter season and global inflation eases.

Overall, the decline shows that while Pakistan’s textile sector remains strong, it must adapt quickly to changing global dynamics to maintain its export competitiveness.
