LAHORE — The Provincial Disaster Management Authority has issued an alert for Punjab. The warning covers the eighth spell of monsoon rains.
According to the PDMA, rain is expected across most districts from August 29 to September 5. Several areas could receive heavy rainfall during this period.
The weather system is expected to affect Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat and Jhelum. Rain is also forecast in Chakwal, Talagang, Attock and Sialkot.
Sheikhupura, Narowal and Gujrat are also expected to receive rainfall. Several other districts across Punjab could experience heavy showers.
These include Lahore, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujranwala and Wazirabad. Hafizabad, Kasur, Okara and Nankana Sahib are also included in the forecast.
Sargodha, Khushab, Mianwali and Noorpur Thal may also receive heavy rain. Faisalabad, Jhang and Toba Tek Singh are among the other affected districts.
Layyah, Bhakkar, Sahiwal and Pakpattan are also expected to receive rainfall. Authorities have advised residents to remain cautious during the weather spell.
Urban Flooding Risk in Major Cities
The PDMA warned about possible urban flooding in several major cities. Lahore, Rawalpindi and Gujranwala are among the areas facing the risk.
Gujrat and Sialkot could also experience water accumulation. Heavy rainfall may overwhelm drainage systems in urban areas.
The authority also warned about possible landslides in hilly regions. Murree and Galiyat could face increased risks during heavy rainfall.
Flash flooding is also possible in seasonal streams. Residents near waterways and vulnerable areas have been urged to remain alert.
PDMA Director General Saif Anwar Jappa directed officials to take precautionary measures. Commissioners and deputy commissioners across Punjab have been asked to stay vigilant.
Several government departments have also been placed on alert. These include health, irrigation, communications and works departments.
Local government and livestock departments have also been directed to remain prepared. Authorities are expected to monitor vulnerable areas throughout the rainfall period.
PDMA Issues Safety Advisory
The PDMA has advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather. People should remain indoors when conditions become dangerous.
Residents have also been warned against entering low-lying areas. They should avoid standing water and unsafe buildings during heavy rain.
People should stay away from electricity poles and exposed wires. During thunderstorms, residents should seek shelter in a safe location.
Parents have been advised to keep children away from flooded areas. Children should also stay away from rivers, canals and other water bodies.
The PDMA urged citizens to follow official weather and safety instructions. People should report emergencies and seek help when necessary. For emergency assistance, citizens can contact the PDMA helpline at 1129.
