The Karachi water supply has been heavily disrupted following a major leakage in a 48-inch main pipeline connected to the North East Pumping Station, officials confirmed on Thursday.
According to a spokesperson for the Karachi Water Corporation, maintenance work is currently underway on the damaged 11K line. Due to this repair, three key pumps supplying water to the city have been shut down temporarily. Additionally, one pump at the Dhabeji Pumping Station has also been stopped for necessary maintenance, further impacting the overall Karachi water supply network.
Several residential and commercial areas, including Scheme 33, Safora, North Nazimabad, Gulberg, Liaquatabad, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Gulistan-e-Jauhar, and Federal B. Area, are facing an acute water shortage. Residents in these areas have reported severe difficulties in meeting their daily water needs.
The spokesperson stated that the shutdown of the main lines has also paralyzed the cityβs water tanker service, deepening the crisis. βDue to repair work, around 150 million gallons per day (MGD) of Karachi water supply has been cut off temporarily,β the official added.
Authorities assured that repair work would be completed within ten hours, after which water distribution will gradually return to normal levels. Meanwhile, the Karachi Water Corporation has confirmed that approximately 500 MGD of water is still being supplied from alternate sources to minimize disruption.
Earlier, Pakistan Peopleβs Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari urged immediate measures to address Karachiβs recurring water issues. Speaking at the inauguration of the new Hub Canal, he emphasized cooperation between federal and provincial governments to ensure clean and sufficient water for the metropolis.
Bilawal also highlighted ongoing efforts to establish treatment plants, which would provide clean water to both residential and industrial sectors, reducing long-term dependency on outdated infrastructure.
