PM Shehbaz Sharif Lands in New York for 79th UNGA Session

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif arrived in New York on Monday for a five-day official visit to the United States, where he will participate in the 79th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

He is scheduled to address the UNGA on Friday, September 27, where he will present Pakistan’s stance on various global and regional issues, including the Kashmir and Palestine conflicts.

The prime minister will reiterate Pakistan’s commitment to multilateralism and its support for the United Nations’ efforts to promote global peace, security, and prosperity.

During his visit, he will also attend several high-level meetings, such as discussions on the threats posed by rising sea levels and an open debate at the UN Security Council on ‘Leadership for Peace.’ He is expected to meet with numerous world leaders and have a meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

Additionally, Prime Minister Sharif will hold talks with World Bank President Ajay Banga and IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva.

Over 130 heads of state and government from around the world are expected to attend the UNGA session.

Today’s Agenda:

PM Shehbaz will attend a reception hosted by UN Chief Guterres for the heads of member states, where he will also have informal discussions with various country leaders on Tuesday. Following that, he will participate in the inaugural event of the UNGA 2024 session. Additionally, the PM is scheduled to meet with Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu during his visit.

Foreign Office spokesperson Mumtaz Zahra Baloch announced on September 19 that Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Ishaq Dar, along with senior government officials, will accompany PM Shehbaz during his trip to the US, which will conclude on September 27.
