On World Liver Day, observed under the theme โSolid Habits, Strong Liver,โ the Pakistan Medical Association raised serious concerns about increasing liver diseases nationwide.
According to PMA Secretary General Abdul Ghafoor Shoro, Pakistan carries one of the highest global burdens of viral hepatitis infections.
He stated that an estimated 13.8 to 15 million people are currently living with Hepatitis B or Hepatitis C across the country.
Out of these cases, nearly 9.8 to 10 million are linked to Hepatitis C, while around 3.8 to 4 million individuals suffer from chronic Hepatitis B.
Health experts highlighted that only 25 to 30 percent of infected individuals are aware of their condition, pointing to major gaps in screening and diagnosis.
Each year, approximately 37,000 deaths occur due to complications such as Liver Cirrhosis and Liver Cancer.
The PMA also warned about the growing prevalence of Metabolically Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease, linked to unhealthy diets and sedentary lifestyles.
Experts urged the public to adopt healthier habits, including reducing processed foods, sugary drinks, and oily meals while increasing daily physical activity.
They also stressed the importance of safe medical practices, such as screened blood transfusions and sterilized equipment, to prevent infections.
The association called on the government to strengthen healthcare infrastructure and expand access to diagnostic and treatment facilities nationwide.
It further emphasized regular screenings, vaccinations, and awareness campaigns to tackle the growing health crisis effectively.
Medical experts concluded that early prevention and consistent healthy habits remain key to reducing liver disease burden in Pakistan.
