Police Arrest Seven Suspects in Maulana Idrees Murder Case

Police have arrested seven suspects in connection with the targeted killing of prominent religious scholar Maulana Idrees in Charsadda, officials confirmed on Friday.

According to investigators, the arrests were made during operations conducted in different areas of the Mardan region. Authorities said the suspects are currently being questioned as the investigation continues from multiple angles.

Maulana Idrees, who was associated with Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazl (JUI-F), was shot dead on May 5 while travelling to a madrassa in Charsadda. Unknown attackers reportedly opened fire on his vehicle during the early morning hours.

Two police guards travelling with him were also injured in the attack. Security officials described the incident as a planned targeted killing.

Investigators said police are using modern technology and surveillance systems to trace those involved in the murder of Maulana Idrees. Authorities have started geo-fencing mobile phone data from Charsadda, Nowshera, and nearby areas to identify suspicious movements linked to the case.

Officials also confirmed that CCTV footage and video evidence are being reviewed carefully. According to preliminary findings, the suspected attacker was seen fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

Police sources stated that the suspect moved through several parts of Peshawar, including Chamkani and Kohat Road, before entering Charsadda through a service road. Initial investigations suggest the attacker arrived in Charsadda around 5:30 am on the day of the incident.

The investigation is being conducted with support from the Safe City project team and other specialised law enforcement units. Authorities said forensic analysis and digital evidence verification are continuing to strengthen the case.

Officials added that search operations have been intensified across the district following the killing of Maulana Idrees. Security has also been increased at sensitive locations to prevent any further incidents.

The murder sparked protests in different parts of Charsadda. Seminary students and JUI-F supporters demanded immediate arrests and a transparent investigation into the killing.

Supporters of the late cleric described him as an influential religious figure in the region. Maulana Idrees had also previously served as a provincial lawmaker and remained active in religious and political circles.

So far, no group has claimed responsibility for the attack. Police officials say efforts are continuing to identify all individuals involved in the targeted killing.
