Two Victoria Police officers were fatally shot on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, during a routine search operation in Porepunkah, a rural town in northeast Victoria. The officers have been identified as Detective Leading Senior Constable Neal Thompson, 59, and Senior Constable Vadim De Waart, 35. A third officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries and is recovering in hospital.
The Shooting Incident
The officers were part of a team executing a search warrant at a property linked to 56-year-old Dezi Freeman, also known as Desmond Filby. Upon arrival, Freeman allegedly opened fire, killing Thompson and De Waart and injuring another officer. Freeman then fled into the surrounding bushland, taking firearms and radios from the officers.
Manhunt Underway
A large-scale manhunt is currently underway to apprehend Freeman. Authorities describe him as heavily armed and experienced in wilderness survival. He is believed to be hiding in the dense bushland near Mount Buffalo National Park. The park has been closed, and a 7.5 km no-fly zone has been established to assist in the search efforts.
Background on Freeman
Freeman is known for his anti-government beliefs and is associated with the “sovereign citizen” movement, which rejects governmental authority. He has a history of legal disputes and has previously had his firearms license revoked. Authorities warn that Freeman is considered extremely dangerous.
Tributes to Fallen Officers
Thompson, nearing retirement, was remembered for his dedication and service since 1987. De Waart, who joined the force in 2018, was an avid traveler and polyglot. Both officers have been honored by their colleagues and the community.
Residents in the area are urged to stay indoors and report any suspicious activity to authorities. The search continues as police work to bring Freeman into custody.
