Pregnant Woman Killed in Karachi Robbery As Street Crime Spirals

In a deeply tragic incident, a 26-year-old pregnant woman named Saima was shot and killed by robbers in Karachi’s District East on Friday after resisting a purse-snatching attempt. She was accompanied by her husband, Irfan, and they were en route to a doctor’s appointment when two armed men on a motorcycle intercepted them near Babar Kanta on the Superhighway.

Irfan recounted that he surrendered his belongings without protest, but when one of the assailants reached for Saima’s purse, she instinctively pulled it back. In response, the robber opened fire, hitting her in the chest. “They not only took my wife’s life, but also our unborn child,” Irfan said through tears. The couple, originally from Larkana, already had two children.

This heartbreaking episode is part of a wider trend of increasing street violence in the city. So far this year, 27 people have been killed in robbery-related incidents, with multiple cases reported in District East in recent days alone. Despite reassurances from authorities, residents continue to live in fear of armed criminals.

In a separate but related event, two alleged robbers were injured and later died following a mob chase in Quaidabad. The suspects had reportedly robbed citizens before being pursued by bystanders, one of whom opened fire. Though the injured suspects tried to escape, they collapsed and were later taken to the hospital. Police later categorized the incident as an encounter, sparking questions over the exact circumstances.

These incidents underscore a grim reality for Karachiites, who face mounting insecurity amid official claims of improved safety.
