President Asif Ali Zardari has issued a strong warning to India against using water as a political weapon, emphasizing that such actions could have severe consequences for regional peace and stability.
Speaking at an environmental and climate policy forum in Islamabad, President Zardari said that Pakistanβs water security is directly linked to regional cooperation under the Indus Waters Treaty, which has remained a cornerstone of peace between the two countries for decades. He stressed that attempts to manipulate or restrict water flow violate international agreements and humanitarian principles.
The President urged New Delhi to avoid unilateral moves that could endanger the livelihoods of millions in Pakistan who depend on the Indus River system. He also called upon the international community and relevant organizations to ensure that India upholds its treaty obligations and refrains from using shared water resources for political leverage.
βWater should be a source of life, not conflict,β Zardari said, highlighting that Pakistan remains committed to peaceful dialogue and cooperation on transboundary water issues. However, he warned that any hostile act involving water diversion or manipulation would be considered an aggression and met with a firm response.
Environmental experts present at the event supported the Presidentβs stance, noting that climate change has already intensified water scarcity in South Asia, making fair and lawful resource sharing even more vital.
Zardari reaffirmed Pakistanβs commitment to sustainable water management, urging domestic reforms alongside regional diplomacy to secure the nationβs long-term water future.
