ISLAMABAD β Internet users across Pakistan faced a major disruption as connections slowed down, causing frustration for millions. Streaming services froze, websites lagged, and apps struggled to function. The outage left customers unable to work, study, or connect smoothly.
On Friday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) confirmed that the mobile internet slowdown in several cities has now been resolved. According to a PTA spokesperson, services are operating normally across the country after urgent measures were taken.
The disruption, which began late Thursday, affected major cities including Islamabad. Popular platforms such as WhatsApp were heavily impacted, with users reporting issues making audio and video calls, sharing files, and sending messages.
PTA assured users that steps have been introduced to stabilize internet speeds and reduce the risk of future breakdowns. Officials added that technical teams had worked continuously to restore services and strengthen system resilience.
This internet outage comes as Pakistan faces broader connectivity issues linked to global infrastructure. Earlier this month, multiple undersea cables in the Red Sea were damaged. These cables are vital for carrying internet traffic between Asia and Europe. With data rerouted through longer and slower paths, users across Pakistan and neighboring regions have been experiencing sluggish speeds and higher latency.
Experts identified SMW4 and IMEWE, two major cables, as the sources of the disruption. Repair work is expected to take nearly five weeks, meaning intermittent slowdowns may persist during peak hours, despite PTAβs efforts to ensure local network stability.
The recent outage highlights the growing reliance of Pakistanβs digital economy on stable internet services. With PTA confirming the restoration of services, users can expect improved connectivity, though challenges may remain until global cable repairs are completed.
