Senator Sania Nishtar of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has resigned from her Senate seat, citing new employment with an international organization in Geneva. Her resignation has been submitted to the Senate Secretariat.
Nishtar, a highly respected physician, cardiologist, and activist, was appointed CEO of Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, in 2024. Throughout her career, she has held numerous leadership roles, including serving as the Special Assistant to the Prime Minister of Pakistan on Poverty Alleviation and Social Safety, where she oversaw the Ehsaas Programme.

In addition to her work in Pakistan, Nishtar has contributed to global health initiatives, chairing the International Advisory Board of the United Nations International Institute for Global Health and advising the German Federal Government on global health matters. She was elected to the Senate from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the 2021 elections and previously served in Pakistan’s interim federal cabinet in 2013, overseeing public health, education, and science portfolios.
