The government of Punjab plans to launch Punjab Airlines in April, officials told the Associated Press of Pakistan (APP). The airline aims to improve provincial connectivity and strengthen airlines operations within the region.
Initially, Punjab Airlines will operate seven passenger aircraft. Domestic flights will be the focus for the first two years. International services are expected to start after this initial period. The plan is designed to gradually expand operations while ensuring efficiency and sustainability.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif will use her existing government helicopter as part of the airlineโs fleet. This aircraft will serve as the first asset of Punjab Airlines. No separate special aircraft will be purchased for her. Ministers and provincial officials will also use the airline for official travel.
Officials emphasized that the airline will operate on a profit-based model. Existing and new aircraft will be fully utilized to generate revenue. When the Chief Minister travels on Punjab Airlines, the full fare will be charged, ensuring transparency and reducing additional financial burden on the provincial treasury.
A strategy is being devised to ensure the new airline does not strain public finances. Officials said the focus will be on maximizing aircraft utilization, keeping operations cost-effective, and maintaining high service standards.
Experts noted that establishing a provincial airline will improve airlines operations in Punjab by increasing domestic flight availability. This initiative is expected to benefit business travelers, government officials, and the general public.
Punjab Airlines will also set the stage for introducing international routes in the future. Authorities highlighted that phased expansion will help manage resources efficiently and maintain consistent operational standards.
The launch of Punjab Airlines marks a significant step in strengthening airlines operations at the provincial level. Officials aim to ensure smooth flight schedules, safety compliance, and reliable services for passengers across Punjab.
The project reflects the governmentโs commitment to modernizing air travel infrastructure and providing cost-effective, accessible services for officials and citizens alike.
