Punjab Unveils Muharram Security Plan, Adopts Zero-Tolerance Policy on Sectarianism

Punjab Home Department has completed a province-wide security plan to ensure peace and public safety during the holy month of Muharram. The strategy aims to maintain law and order while promoting religious harmony across the province.

According to official sources, authorities have introduced strict measures for processions and religious gatherings during Muharram. Only licensed processions and officially approved majalis will be allowed to take place. Organisers will be required to follow designated routes and approved schedules without exception.

Officials say these measures are intended to prevent security breaches and ensure smooth management of religious events.

The new security framework focuses heavily on modern surveillance and monitoring systems. Authorities have directed the installation of CCTV cameras, walk-through gates, and metal detectors at entry points of gatherings and processions.

In addition, all religious events will be monitored through audio and video recording. Security personnel will maintain a strong presence along procession routes and at major gathering points.

The Punjab government has also ordered increased security around sensitive locations. Commercial markets, transport terminals, and important public installations will remain under strict observation. Hotels and guest houses will also face enhanced scrutiny during the mourning period.

As part of the plan, authorities may use drone surveillance in border regions and riverine areas. Signal jammers and snipers could also be deployed at highly sensitive locations if needed.

The Home Department has reiterated its commitment to maintaining sectarian harmony. Officials have instructed law enforcement agencies to strictly enforce the Loudspeaker Act throughout the province.

A zero-tolerance policy will be implemented against hate speech, the public display of weapons, and the spread of sectarian or extremist material. Authorities have warned that any violation will result in immediate legal action.

Cyber monitoring teams have also been placed on alert. These teams will monitor social media platforms to prevent the circulation of inflammatory or provocative content during Muharram.

Emergency response services have been directed to remain fully prepared. Public hospitals, Rescue 1122, bomb disposal units, and fire brigades will stay on standby to respond quickly to any emergency situation.

Meanwhile, local administrations have been instructed to work closely with peace committees and religious scholars. Their role will be to promote unity, tolerance, and interfaith harmony throughout the holy month.
