Punjab Announces Wheat Policy 2026, Fixes Price at Rs3,500 per Maund

Punjab Announces Wheat Policy 2026, Fixes Price at Rs3,500 per Maund

Punjab government has officially unveiled its Wheat Policy 2026, setting the price of wheat at Rs3,500 per maund. The policy aims to support farmers and stabilize the wheat market across the province.

According to the official notification, the government plans to purchase wheat in collaboration with the private sector. Punjab aims to procure up to 2.5 million metric tonnes of wheat for strategic reserves this year.

The notification specifies that wheat will be acquired through selected stakeholders. The price has been fixed at the same level as the open market price of 2025. Farmers will receive full payment of Rs3,500 per maund immediately at the time of purchase, ensuring timely compensation.

Management of the strategic wheat reserves will be handled through purchasing banks. The Punjab government will cover 70% of the financing cost, while selected stakeholders will be provided government warehouses free of charge. This is intended to make wheat procurement more efficient and transparent.

The policy also sets limits for private aggregators. No aggregator can take less than 0.5% or more than 20% of the total wheat. These measures are designed to prevent monopolies and ensure fair participation of all stakeholders.

Officials say the Wheat Policy 2026 will help strengthen food security in Punjab. By maintaining strategic reserves, the government aims to stabilize wheat prices and prevent shortages. The policy also provides a clear framework for cooperation between the government and private sector.
