Punjab government has approved a major expansion of its electric bus network across the province.
Under the plan, 1,500 Electric Buses will operate across 91 tehsils. The new tehsil-level service is scheduled to begin in January 2027.
The expansion is being introduced under the vision of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. Dedicated electric bus depots have also been approved for every tehsil included in the programme.
The first batch of buses for the expanded service is expected to arrive in Lahore in January 2027.
Punjab Targets 3,000 Electric Buses by June 2027
The provincial government has also approved additional buses for several districts across Punjab. According to the plan, the government aims to have 3,000 Electric Buses operating across Punjab by June 2027.
The first phase of the wider expansion is scheduled for completion by September 2027.
Several divisions and districts will receive buses based on the approved allocation plan. Multan will receive 169 buses for nine tehsils. Sahiwal will get 87 buses for four tehsils.
Dera Ghazi Khan will receive 63 buses. Meanwhile, 215 buses will serve 11 tehsils in Bahawalpur.
Faisalabad’s 12 tehsils will receive 202 buses. Another 198 buses will operate across 14 tehsils in Sargodha.
More Punjab Districts to Get Electric Bus Service
Currently, 612 electric buses are fully operational across different districts of Punjab.
These buses provide daily transport services to millions of passengers.
Another 192 buses are expected to start operations in Multan and other districts within the next few days. Additional buses will also be deployed in Sargodha, Sahiwal, Faisalabad, Lahore and Muzaffargarh.
Rawalpindi, Jhang, Bahawalpur and Rahim Yar Khan are also included in the expansion. Other locations include Attock, Okara, Bhakkar, Hafizabad, Khanewal, Chiniot and Layyah.
The government has also approved additional electric bus services for Sialkot, Murree, Gujrat and Sheikhupura.
Punjab Expands Public Transport Network
The Electric Buses programme is part of wider efforts to expand public transport services across Punjab.
Meanwhile, work on mass transit systems in Faisalabad and Gujranwala is progressing rapidly. Renovation and construction work is also underway at 25 stations of the Lahore Metrobus service.
According to the provided plan, work at these stations is nearing completion.
