Punjab Bans Laser Lights Near Airports During Basant Festival

Punjab Bans Laser Lights Near Airports During Basant Festival

The Punjab Home Department has imposed a strict ban on laser light use near airports during the upcoming Basant festival. The restrictions aim to ensure aviation safety and prevent accidents caused by lights affecting the airspace.

Section 144 has been enforced specifically for the sale and use of laser lights, beam lights, and rotating projector lights. The ban will be in effect on February 6, 7, and 8, covering the three-day Basant festival.

According to the notification, the restrictions apply within a five-kilometre radius of all airports. The sale and public use of laser light equipment in these areas will also remain prohibited for the next three months. Authorities warned that laser beams can impair pilots’ vision during take-off and landing, posing serious risks to air safety.

The Punjab Home Department emphasized that the ban is not meant to restrict festival celebrations but is focused on ensuring public safety and protecting aircraft operations. Residents are advised to follow the rules and avoid using prohibited lights near airports.

Officials have urged the public and festival organizers to cooperate with law enforcement agencies during Basant. Any violation of the laser light ban may result in legal action under Section 144, which grants authorities the power to prevent actions that may endanger safety.

This decision comes as part of broader measures to make the Basant festival safe and enjoyable for citizens while minimizing potential risks to air traffic. Authorities continue to monitor high-risk areas and will enforce the restrictions strictly.
